The farewell

As we stand on the cusp of autumn and winter,

The birds fly off into the pink dawn

Early every morning

Looking like autumn leaves in the rising sun.

The stragglers skim the silver surface of the lake

In perfect and opposite harmony

Looking like little origami birds.

“In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” — Robert Lynd

  1. They DO look like origami birds. We used to have Canadian geese fly over our valley once a year. It was an amazing sight to behold and hear. I don’t know what happened to that migration. I haven’t seen them in years and these photos make me miss them all the more.

  2. We’ve been seeing lots of birds in flight here in Seattle lately, too. Beautiful captures as always and I do love your pink skies! Hope your weekend is going well!

  4. Gorgeous scenes…incredible added commentary!! You should seriously consider adding your link to this post at my Birdin’ Blog’s meme…
If you wish, go back to Hootin’ Anni’s and on my sidebar you will find a link “I’d Rather B Birdin”…click on that and it’ll take you to the photo blog and then you can add your link. Your images is a treasure that should be shared in my opinion.

  5. I love taking pictures of birds- there is an elegance even when blurred that is held in their flight that quiets the soul- as do your pictures. Cheers, Danette

  6. What magnificent scenes. Always something deeply sad about the leaving birds, yet one can’t gaze on it without a sense of sheer wonder. They will return.

  7. I like the movement that the birds bring to these pictures. Splendid.

Thanks for the comment on my blog – I’ve been in Oman for a week hence slow reply!

  8. In the first photo, the flying formation of the birds look like a heart, and the birds also look like “origami birds” as you wrote. There’s something lonely about their parting one group after another but look forward to seeing them again next spring.

  9. I’m glad you know “origami” birds. Have you ever done origami? Connecting dots of birds makes drawing in the sky. Lovely pictures!
