Early morning.
The sky and snow are blue with cold
Until the sun rises
Tinging the soft underbellies of the popcorn clouds
With pink sugar.
The kids pile into overalls and boots
And gloves and hats and scarves
And kids and dog and I spill out
Into the gorgeous new day
To greet the thick fog rising like a veil
Above the welcoming iced over lake.
It’s cold. Very cold.
“I’ve got fog in my gloves!” my youngest shouts.
“Let’s go home.”
And enjoy the sensation and memory of that fog.
Fog in our gloves.

I love the imagery of pink sugar.

Oh I’d want to go home too if I had fog in my gloves! But that’s a great image. Your kids are so expressive — now I wonder where they get that ;>)
Hope you’re feeling better.

Beautiful photographs but your accompanying text is wonderful. Fog in the gloves – sounds magical!
I hope your athlete’s body is recovering – sounds horrendous. Does Oscar lick your feet? My husband discovered quite by chance that foot-licking cured his athlete’s foot – I think there’s iodine or something like iodine in dog saliva.

A great post about the intens cold and loneliness of winter in the northern hemisphere. Is it Sweden? Very clever poem, creating the perfect atmosphere!
Yesterday I saw a documentary on TV about survival in the coldest areas of Alaska and I felt the icy wind in my very bones. Thanks for sharing!

Beautifully woven prose, so positive and devoid of complaint, inspired by the enveloping snow and thick-feathered clouds. Lovely still are the photos as reminder of the day’s escapade with the family. Good one to start a weekend.

Photos like this could really seduce a person to go live in a cold climate … until you actually feel the cold and the fog! Then you dream of tropical beaches. Well, I do. I do now. Outside my window the snow is still everywhere.
Of course, while I lived in the muggy tropics of West Africa and Indonesia, replete with tropical beaches, I couldn’t wait to find a cooler climate.
Better to just love where you are. Beautiful photos!

A great insight, I’ll have to remember that metaphor when I’m out and about.
And it does make more sense than what I read at first, “fox in my gloves” – but that would also have been an interesting picture.
