What can one person do?

Have you ever thought about what you can do to make the world a better place? I’m sure you have! But then, maybe the cynic kicks in and you think, “I can’t do that much on my own. I can’t change the world.”

Oh – but you can! I know that it is all too easy to be overwhelmed, humbled even, by the magnitude of the world – its problems and its beauties – and to realize just how insignificant we are in the vast scheme of things.

And it is just this ‘frozen-rabbit-caught-in-the-glare-of-the-headlights’ kind of attitude that can render us all into gibbering idiots. And we give up – right there and then.

But if we all sat around thinking that we couldn’t change things – then things would never change. And we would still be gnawing raw meat off bones in damp caves somewhere. (I, for one, am happy not to have to do this!)

So, what am I trying to say here? (Mmmm… good question!) I think I’m trying to say that we can all make a difference, no matter how small. Because if you put all those small things together, then they can add up to a huge heap of good stuff. We can help make a difference – one baby step at a time.

That is why I have decided to take part in what I hope wlll be a massive global action to make things better.

I like to think that my little blog, together with thousands of others also focusing on the global, complex issue of poverty, will really put its money where its mouth is (that conjures up a weird picture, doesn’t it?) in its own modest, small way.

I know that many of you out there have often posed the question of what you and your blog can do to help others. Well, this at least, is a start. That is why I have registered my blog and on October 15, that’s next Wednesday folks, I’ll be writing something personal about poverty.

And I’ll be donating money for every reader who views the post and – even more money if you leave me a comment that day. So, you can even PRETEND to read what I write and still contribute… (Note to self: must warn Sir Pe to save all his loose coins!)

You can accuse me of viewing the world through rose-tinted spectacles. Call me an idealist and laugh at me. Mock me for giving away some hard-earned money.

But I can live with that. As long as you check in on Wednesday October 15th and mock me publicly then.

Can we call it a date?

  1. Nice idea. I think I’ll join in! And I’ll link back to you on my post so I can boost your hits and empty your pockets! 🙂

Which organisation do you plan to donate money to?

  2. Paddy – you’re my hero! Thanks for doing your bit to empty my pockets!

I think I’ll be splitting the donation (unless it’s teeny-tiny) between The Global Fund that is fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria – and Kiva.org: which lends out micro-loans to people in developing countries so that they can start businesses and help get their community out of poverty. I think someone last year got a Nobel Prize for this kind of micro-lending…

  3. It was Mother Theresa that said something along the lines that what she did was a drop in the ocean but that the ocean would be less without her drop. And to continue with that theme, look at how water can wear away rock to a smooth round pebble, very gently over hundreds of years. Each drop counts!

  4. Hi Lady Fi! Thanks for stopping by Blog Around the World. You are all linked up under Sweden. Do you still need help adding the code for the BATW button? If so, I can hook you up with the BATW “janitor” Darcy, and she can instruct you on what to do! Check in daily to see where in the world we are headed next!
