Man of peace

A couple of weeks ago, the Dalai Lama visited Sweden.

This caused a big stir and thousands of us bought tickets to listen to him speak.

People from all walks of life came to his talk

And all the money went to help Tibetan refugees around the world.

He didn’t preach, but talked about how the world needs more respect,

More love and compassion.

He spent a lot of time laughing and making jokes

And seemed to be not only a man of peace –

But also a man at peace.

“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” — Dalai Lama

  1. I am sure witnessing this must have been one of a kind experience. As you say, he is at peace. That is the greatest achievement in life, I believe.;)
Beautiful photography capturing the essence of this great man.

  4. I couldn’t agree more with the quote, that’s exactly what I think and that’s why I don’t need religions or temples to live in peace. I admire this man so very much! Great coverage of the event.

  5. Thank you. It is important on days like today to know there are people who are conscious of the need to talk about peace and for them to be at peace with the world. My mother and sister went to see the Dali Lama speak a few years ago in Vancouver. they thoroughly enjoyed the event. Hope you did too.

I’ve recently listened to a brilliant interview on Krista Tippett’s “On Being” podcast (though it was called “Speaking of Faith” at the time of the interview) with the Dali Lama and other religious leaders on “happiness”. You should give it a listen.

  7. Lady F1, Dalai Lama visited Japan last autumn. I could not go to listen to his speech. But I have seen him in the documentary film. Even though he is the most spiritual and holiest person, he has a lot of sense of humor and his words are easy to understand. Thank you for sharing the great story about him. Have a nice day!

  10. Hi – I really like the message that we dont need to over-complicate things, and that the centre of things should be the heart.

For a long time I did a job that made me ill -“heartsick” if the truth be told.

I should have listened to this man!

  12. I’ve wondered what it’s like to see the Dalai Lama in person – if you somehow feel some of that peacefulness yourself. The quotes are great. If only the leaders of the world were all men of peace.

  15. A very apt post!

The Dalai Lama was in Dublin just days before he went to Sweden. He gave the most amazing speech here as well. In the audience were several people who had been effected by horrendous crime and violence but who have shown incredible forgiveness.

For me, one of the most amazing photos from his speech here in Dublin was one of Mickey Harte and his son-in-law. Mickey Harte is a very well known football manager here whose daughter Micheala was murdered on her honeymoon in Mauritius a few months ago. She was incredibly well known throughout Ireland and the impact on her death on people north and south of the border here was immense. But both her father and husband have been incredible in how they have dealt with her murder and the forgiveness they have shown and their meeting with the Dalai Lama only underlined that all the more.

A great post – thank you for sharing it.

  16. I am glad that you are also a fan of his! My daughters and I saw a video tape about him and we read many of his quotations. We are really impressed. He is like Jesus: a man of peace!
One of his quotes is:”Within all beings there is the seed of perfection. However, compassion is required in order to activate that seed which is inherent in our hearts and minds.”
