Glowing eclipse

Tuesday morning was an unusual day in that we saw a partial eclipse of the sun.

I tried to capture the sun by hanging out of the bedroom window. No success as it was hidden behind the horizon.

But I was rewarded by a pink candy striped sky. A trumpet call announcing the start of the eclipse.

Then it gradually got darker and an eerie light crept across the sky

Making the bare tree branches glitter with remarkable light

And painting the sky with lovely swathes of glowing sepia.

A long time ago – so long that I can’t remember which country I was in at the time but I know it was a country far away – I did experience a total eclipse of the sun. It was in the time before global media and the Internet so I had no idea it was coming. The sun disappeared; the world went horribly dark in the middle of the day. It was terrifying and amazing all at the same time.

  1. Beautiful pink and golden skies and lovely reminiscence! It’s easy to understand why ancient peoples thought that the world was ending during an eclipse. Imagine not only not reading about it in advance but also not even ever learning what it was.

  2. Ah yes, we had the eclipse too. I was driving to work and as the sun was very low I took a short glimpse at it and could clearly se the eclipse – and as you say, the light was different, almost liquid gold spilling into silver. Unfortunately I simply could not take any pictures, as it would require a black film (screen) and I did not have one.;)
Your images are as always simply gorgeous.;)

  4. Although I didn’t witness this recent eclipse, I do remember when I was a child and there was a total eclipse. It went really dark in the middle of the afternoon and all the birds started to panic. It also went very cold quite quickly, even though it was summer. I should think the whole thing only took a few minutes.

I love your photos and also of the children in the post below.

  5. Fi these are beautiful images…so full of mystery. I remember as a small child in elementary school that here was a total eclipse of the sun and we all filed out of the school building to watch, but were warned sternly not to look directly at the sun because it would harm our eyes…so I remember squinting very carefully…it was quite amazing!

  6. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the effects of that complete an eclipse. I think the partial light is eerie (and beautiful) but sudden unexplained dark would be terrifying.

  7. Those are interesting colours of your photos Fi. Of course we never saw the eclipse. I remember a full eclipse as a kid, about 5pm in summer. It was both exciting and scary, so I know what you mean. – Dave

  8. beautiful skies. the tree silhouette makes it more dramatic. i’ve seen an eclipse once but it was at night so the darkness wasn’t scary. it would be a frightening experience at the middle of the day.

  9. I remember my first eclipse, too. It was during grade school and we knew it was coming, but the darkness that settled on us in the middle of the day was still, like you said, eery!

Lovely morning photos! I’m glad you didn’t fall out the window 🙂

    Happy friday!

  10. I love the shots you did get, even if you missed the actual eclipse! Imagine what it must have been like, way back when people did not know what caused an eclipse, if you found it so terrifying!

  11. Beautiful sky shots of an amazing event. I did experience a total eclipse about 18 or so years ago when my older son was in first grade. I remember taking him out of school so that he could witness it through a shadow box. The sky was indeed incredibly different but beautiful.

  14. I love the way you’ve caught the changing colors on the sky. And what dramatic changes! Love the tones! I did see a partial eclipse a long time ago but ‘digital’ was unheard of then!

    this wonderful glow.
It is a long time since I saw a complete eclipse of the sun, but I remember we had to put on very dark sunglasses.
    Part solar eclipses are occurring
every year, at least two, up to five.
    Eclipse chasers are called “umbraphiles”!
The last complete eclipes was on july the 11. 2010.

We want to view the eclipse in Cairns next year (I’ve never seen one), but at the moment our crystal ball can’t see that far!
