I wake to a world of plummeting temperatures and snow.
Minus 25 C. It’s cold. Very cold.
My glasses are white with a thick layer of ice.
Not a bus or train in sight. Freezing.
I’m on the verge of giving up the wait.
Then, suddenly, a sound…
A woodpecker.
Beating out a message on the frozen bark of a tree.
It’s a drum roll that speaks of determination,
Of patience and hope.
Of the promise of better things to come.

They are so beautiful! I saw one this afternoon but it was on top of a VERY tall tree.

Though I am also red-headed, I claim no kinship to a woodpecker who braves the frozen tundra. I had no idea they would stay year-round in such a cold place!
But his message is loud and clear, and thank you for pointing it out!

It’s hard being a bird in such cold weather, but they’re driven on by unseen forces.

Doesn’t it make you wonder how birds, so much smaller than we are, can withstand such cold? Nature is amazing!

I really enjoy woodpeckers. They usually have such interesting coloring. Back when I was a “birder,” they were one of my favorite birds who visited.

We have woodpeckers around here also but haven’t heard any of them through the winter…maybe they’ve all gone to Sweden? Looks like your trees aren’t as cold as ours…probably easier on the beaks 😉 Great photos Fi!!
