Transformative

Mist has magical powers:

It can transform ordinary objects

(Here a crane on the jetty in Ericeira, Portugal)

Into classic suspense movie shots.

It turns a sunrise

Into a moment of purple-tinged drama —

And if it lingers all day,

A misty sunset can turn

Landscapes into paintings.

Golden waves

The kids spent most of their time

In Ericeira, Portugal, surfing.

Arc.jpg

Some days, the waves

Were big and foamy and fun.

Nel.jpg

Some days, the lessons took place

Just as the sun was setting

Golden surf.jpg

And it looked as if the surfers

Were gliding on gilded waves.

Sunset surf

After the heat of Lisbon,

It was wonderful to escape

To the seaside village of Ericeira in Portugal.

We stayed in a beach house

With gorgeous views of the sunset

And surfers gliding over the golden sea.

Fairytale Palace

The small bus chugs up the winding roads of Sintra —

And then after a steep uphill climb on foot,

Turret.jpg

You gasp when you finally glimpse the fairytale outline

Of Pena Palace:

A beautiful example of 19th century

Portuguese Romanticism.

Gorgeous tiles and lemon walls

Are a breathtaking reminder

Of how amazing the human imagination

Coupled with architecture can be.

Feast for the eyes

Walking through Lisbon is a delicious feast for the eyes.

Wherever you look, there are tiles and mosaics

Golden tiles

And beautifully decorated shop fronts

Like this one – it’s the oldest cod cake shop in Lisbon.

And the colour — so warm and delicious

Like this lemon sorbet building;

Lemon

Or deliciously purple

And happy.

Purple splash

Even the faded old grand buildings near the harbour

Glitter with the gold of the setting sun

And transform into beauty.

Orange beauty

There’s nothing better

Than strolling along the beach

Orange sun 1

And drinking in the heady beauty

Of a fierce orange sunset,

Sun setting 2

While the pink balloon of the disappearing sun

Turns waves into silk.

Frolic

It’s amazing how much a sky – and a beach –

Can change in the space of a day or two:

From cloudy drama

Footprints

To the joyfulness

Of dogs frolicking

In a glorious sunset.

The walled town

Óbidos in Portugal is famous for being

A perfectly preserved walled settlement.

Walls

The castle and its walls date back

To Roman times

Walls looming

But as you walk the narrow and steep cobbled streets,

You meet all kinds of buildings ranging from Gothic

To Renaissance and Baroque standing shoulder to shoulder.

Church and wall

The city gate is a gorgeous

Blue tiled balcony.

Tiled balcony

The town was very much geared for tourism

So my favourite parts of it

Were the secret alleys,

Secret stairs

The quirky old stone houses

Blue striped house

And far-away glimpses

Of purple splashes against old tiled roofs.

Windows of light

The beach at Baleal, Portugal, is covered in dunes

That are environmentally protected.

Vista copy

One evening, I went out at sunset

To see the dunes rising against the sky

Like the humps of camels

Windows of light

While the sun burst forth

In wonderful windows of light.
