Midsummer beauty

Midsummer is that most Swedish of Swedish traditions:

A wonderful time spent in red cottages with outdoor loos;

Red house

Where you can take shots of yourself

Next to iconic old red buildings;

Self-portrait

And where you dance around the midsummer pole

Wearing flowers and a silly smile.

This year was a bit of a wash-out for us —

But the rain did create a canvas of abstract beauty.

    1. Oh, that’s not frost, but broken mirror and gravel on the ground… It was actually fairly warm when I took the shot.

  2. Sorry it rained on your parade … to use a cliché. It does this quite frequently in my part of the world but as you say there is always something wonderful to discover in the gray such as bright red splashes of color and lovely patterns formed by the drops.

    1. Hi – it’s not actually the ‘first’ day of summer over here. Midsummer celebrations always occur near the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. After that, the days get shorter and the days get longer, so I think this is why it’s the mid-point.

  3. Your mirror photo is so innovative! We have had a lot of rain so far this spring and summer but in a way I am happy about it as this area has had much drought the past few years. I hope we both get more sunshine and pretty summer days soon!

  5. Wonderful images which remind me of many lovely summers spent in Sweden…in a red wooden house next to a lake ( with an indoor loo!) A friend told me that it was one of the coldest midsummers ever?

  6. Wonderful pictures. I love midsummer since I read my first book of Astrid Lindgren, and always dreamt of Scandinavian summer houses!

  7. Fun view of the maypole against the sky. Lots of celebrating in the many Swedish and Norwegian communities in Minnesota this weekend, too.

  13. Can a summer festival ever be washed out? Rain must fall, without it no green and no rain drop canvases.

    The red the hand hewn logs -honey icing if there is such thing.
