Every year, a replica of a Viking boat
Suddenly appears on our lake.
It looked very pretty
As it rested in the sunlight.
A man and his son make the boats by hand
And sail them too – even as far away as to Finland and Russia (from Sweden).
I love the weathered look of the wood
And those cool dragon-shaped oarlocks.
The heavy wooden oars and the mast
Are stored in the boat for safekeeping.
And – yes! – that’s Oscar checking the boat out.

Dear LadyFi, do they sell the boats each year? Or is there just one that they put into the water each spring? Such a lovely arc from stem to stern. They are real artisans. Peace.

They have several boats, I believe. They row to other countries on invitation and take part in Viking festivals etc.

I avoid using this word, but it is all that comes to mind. Awesome! Two things on my bucket list to build is a log cabin and a planked wooden boat. I am with you. I like the fact they allowed the craftsmanship to shine rather than glossy it up. Tar drips, shaving marks and all. A wild appearing boat for a wild ocean. Your lake I suspect hardly a challenge, but am sure it’s surface and well as surrounding inhabitants revel in its appearance. Great images.

How I miss a solid wooden boat. Well, not any more as I am far away from the water, but when we sailed and had a boat in a marina where ours and all the rest were made of fiberglass. It is wonderful to see an old tradition kept alive.

What wonderful photos of a magical Viking boat. Up in the Western Isles of Scotland, where the Vikings ruled for 500 years, they build clinker boats…but they are not as elegant and low slung in the water as this gorgeous creation. Your photos are beyond wonderful Fi, but I really want a shot in the boat…to sail to Russia…… 🙂
