Joy

It’s always bitter-sweet when summer starts

Its slow retreat into autumn.

For those of us with short summers and long winters,

It’s often a matter of creating memories

joyful jump

And bottling up those intense moments

Of summer joy

So that we can spread some sunshine later on.

It brings to mind one of my favourite metaphorical quotes by Camus:

In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.

  1. Camus’s quote does bring it home. Life is beautiful, life is exhilarating -I’ve always thought the most important thing a parent can do, is to give a child as many fond memories as possible. In doing so, they have cache to fall back on and to use as needed when the troubles of growing into adults need equalizing.

  2. Since I was a teenager in Stockholm, reading all those “heavy” authors, I have loved that Camus quote. I love the action photos of your kids, they bring back memories exactly like that. I have to tell you, I am so glad I found your blog.

  3. Fun photos, Lady Fi! It is sad to summer coming to an end. School started today, so the children are very sad or happy. Lovely photos, thanks for sharing. Have a great week!

  4. Those do look like some amazing and beautiful moments of joy right there! So fun. Enjoy while you can and keep the memories with you….as your own words and your quote say so much more beautifully than I just did!

  5. Summer fun at it’s best there! We’re in the same boat, winding down, savoring the summer so we can recall it on those coldest, darkest winter days. School starts next week, frost & cold will soon follow, and then the deep freeze & deep snow, until we meet again where the sun meets the summer waters.

  7. Great photos, Fiona… Your kids are adorable –and I’m sure they loved jumping into the water like that…. Yes, Summers are SHORT –and this year they seem even shorter than usual.

  9. Fi – That lake looks freezing! I notice in the second pic, your son is wearing a sweatshirt. Oh, to be a child again! Well, maybe not – but I do like their bravado!
