Walking through history

A couple of months ago, I had a recording job in Stockholm’s medieval Old Town.

I arrived early with my camera so I could take you on a historical walk.

Let’s start off with Stockholm’s oldest – and most iconic – square.

Main square

The main streets are usually full of tourists in the summer,

So it might be a good idea to wander down some of the colourful side streets.

(Notice the decorative electrical box.)

As the sun struggled over the narrow, dark streets

The house facades lit up in lovely pastel colours.

Further on, right next to the Royal Castle,

I was mesmerized by the symmetrical beauty

Of an old building being renovated.

A few houses along the street, I glanced up

To look at the soaring tower of Stockholm’s oldest church.

Finally, it was time to go to Priest’s Street,

Where I had enough time to admire

The postbox (where residents collect their mail)

Painted to look like the very houses on the street.

I must say that history has never looked as

Poetic as it does on these old cobbled streets.

  2. How nice to be able to take a tour of these lovely streets – even though I’m sitting at a computer thousands of miles away. It always impresses me (as an American) how Europeans take such good care of their architectural heritage, right down to the smallest details, like a mailbox! Beautiful.

  3. Wonderful architecture and colours. If only those walls could speak. I wonder what they hold in their stony memories?

  4. I love the palette of the buildings, which I find to be much like that in the oldest sections of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Wonderful tour, thank you.

  6. The decorated electricity boxes reminded me of something I saw in Oman – the air conditioner boxes on the outsides of the buildings were all covered in ornate boxes, which made them look like part of the buildings rather than just an add on.

  7. Wouldn’t it be a good idea if you published a tourist guide with all your beautiful photos of Sweden, the great cities of Sweden , the wonderful views and all combined with your poetical words.

  9. What gorgeous pictures! Such a beautiful city. My brother lived there for a while and I don’t think he ever showed us any photos. How sad… Thanks for giving me a little peak into this historical place! -Danette

  11. Oh ladyfi, I guess your name is Fiona, I did not know that. Anyway, I loved seeing the streets and the Royal Castle. When the King and Queen of Sweden came to my city….guess what, it was so exciting because my family (and me) was chosen to meet and spend time with them. I have photos to prove it. And it was a highlight in my life.

  12. Wow, your photos are dynamic and fantastic! I like to walk through history. I’d like to slide into that narrow cobbled lane between the buildings. The architectures in the first image looks like the ones I saw in Germany.
