The Yin and Yang

A while back, my daughter received a bouquet of flowers after singing in her school show.

As they graced the kitchen table, I notice a bright beam of light leading the eye to

A bud holding the fuzzy promise of hope to come —

In stark contrast to the unfurled beauty of a tulip already in full bloom.

Bud

I took the bouquet outside

Into the gentle snow,

snowy vase

And enjoyed the yin of the white snowflakes

On the yang of the rich red petals.

Snowflaked red tulip

Suddenly, my philosophical mood was broken

By Oscar photobombing my photo session.

But I guess that’s what yin and yang is all about —

Complementary forces (even if it is just a dog’s tail)

Forming harmony to remind us

That we are all part of a greater whole.

  1. Exquisite flowers — perfect captures with the snow flakes and, of course, Oscar’s tail is the perfect exclamation point!! Hope your week is off to a great start!

  2. Funny… I don’t usually think much in terms of yin and yang but I happened to have them in my blog post today too (referring to male and female Mandarin ducks).

  3. Reminds me of the idea of or use of found objects; similar but different as this feels like found sensibility. Daring, adventurous, whimsical, left to chance.

Yes the images have punch, yes they have all the pleasures that one gets from form, colour, mixing soft tone and crystal detail. But it is that play between physical and emotional, fragile vs robust. This is very much a study then it is photograph, if you know what mean.Hard to do, hard to explain, yet one could spend a life time flirting with the possibilities.

  4. The flowers are absolutely gorgeous. I had to laugh at your sneeze comment on my pollen picture because it’s exactly what I’ve been doing along with watering eyes and sinus headache. Fortunately we had a strong rain that drove much of the pollen away.

  5. Yes—we are all part of a great whole… There is Yin and there is Yang… But—depending upon our attitudes, it’s all good!!!!!! Love the ‘fuzzy’ promise of hope in that bud to be!!!!! Love the idea of Oscar jumping into your photo session!!!! That’s just life, isn’t it????? Have a great week, Fiona.

  9. The photos are quite lovely but I had to laugh at Oscar’s tail. Dogs are such hams.. even if they don’t realize it.

  10. Leave it to the Mighty O to steal the spotlight from such gorgeous flowers, using nothing but his tail! 🙂

That first photo, so soft and dreamy, really stole my heart, but the vivid, dramatic Yin and Yang of the red tulip and white snow is stunning as well. Wonderful photos and wonderful post, as always!
