Springter

Springter is that time of year when spring and winter compete to see who is going to rule the weather.

One day the sun is shining and spring is shaking loose with a rainbow of melting snow.

The next day, winter is back with a vengeance – fresh snow and ice make art out last autumn’s leaves

Still clinging to the trees in a display of perseverance.

A bud tries to unfurl but is caught there between seed and flower

Between spring and winter

Between hope and promise.

(Don’t know about you – but I think this pretty much describes middle age too.)

  1. Sounds about right! Although perhaps middle age could be more aptly described by autumter.

We had another round of winter last night with snow and cold temps but at this time of year the fine days far outnumber the cold and snowy days. I can hardly wait until the temps are consistently in the 80s!!!

  3. What a beautiful expression of the time in between seasons. Yes, those precious moments full of promise.
And what you describe here is so typical of the month of April – that elusive whimsical month that has a difficult time to make up it’s mind.
Stunning photography as always, so very sensitive end almost poetic.;)

  4. We are definitely of one world, yet on opposite sides of the globe!!! Today is gorgeous again and the snow is melting…yet two days ago we had some wind, some rain, some snow…and I expect it will be this way for a month or two!!! Lovely post!

  5. Hi Fi, I wonder what it’s called when you are past the “flower” stage (as I am…)? Love your capture of the ice crystals falling from the limb. It snowed 14″ here overnight.

  6. Although we have no snow, our weather is fluctuating from warmish sunny days to cold, windy, rainy days so I think Springter is a very good word for here too. Wintspring doesn’t sound so good somehow.

  9. Lovely bit of word creation – and a positive look at an awful time of the year weatherwise. I wish I could see through the fog to a glimpse of some of that beauty you see. Roll on spring!

  10. Oh … those in between times! There seem to be so many of them in life as expressed by your poetic words and photo of an ice-capped bud that is no doubt in shock.

  11. Oh yes, Springter, new word for me. I wonder if it is a legal Scrabble word. Here in Oklahoma, USA, Springter is finally over I think.

    Great pictures.

  15. heeeheeee – springter! Is that what this is! 😀

So far, we’ve been very lucky here in Härnösand. You saw the butterfly I snapped a photo of yesterday… Right now it’s raining – hopefully it will help melt away the deepest snow in Sweden! GO SPRING!

  17. How true this post is for where I live. I will be remembering and using this new work (springter) for sure.

I have been hopping around your archives and love what I have seen. I want to thank you for leaving a comment on my photo blog. It led me to yours.

I know that I will be back and hope that you found something on my site to pique your interest and keep you coming back as well.

My sister has been taking in exchange students for many years. Her first was from Sweden and fit in with my large family so well that she keeps coming back for visits. Because of Rebecca we have all come to love everything Swedish.

  18. Quiz!
Why does spring come at the end of springter? Because “spring” can jump upward and forward.

Then why can’t winter “win”? Sorry, I have no idea.

  21. Beautiful pictures and… is that really a word or did you coin it? Perfect to describe much of the US too (not here where we are). And I’m wondering about your final comment. Maybe that’s why so many of us that are well past our “springter” have chosen Florida, where it’s easier to cherish the illusion that we still have a little spring in our stems ;>)
