The epitome of Swedishness

Every summer, many Swedes take a month’s holiday to relax and get back in touch with nature – and themselves.

They enjoy long light evenings in summer cottages with outdoor plumbing (and sometimes no electricity)  in the middle of the woods.

You may remember that we did this very thing two years ago when we hired some little red cottages out in the countryside.

We are repeating the experience this year – but in a little timbered cottage with an actual toilet (a dry closet) inside!

We got the keys to the house at the weekend. It was like visiting a fairytale cottage.

A few snowdrops waved in greeting while they enjoyed the spring sunshine.

A short walk away, there is a beach on the shores of a sea inlet.

Right now, it’s covered in snow and ice, but I can just imagine the sand and the sea, can’t you?

Oscar is guarding the wooden playhouse. The bigger house with the veranda (see photo below) is the guest cottage with room for four people.

The brown wooden building between the two is the guest toilet.

After all, even if you have indoor plumbing, there are some traditions you just shouldn’t change!

    1. We are renting it just by ourselves. The garden is huge, but the main cottage and guest house are small, and the kitchen tiny. We do intend to have lots of guests over though…

  5. It is out of a fairytale. Lovely cottage and grounds. All the best to you and your family, including the dog, for a fantastic spring, summer season. Looks fantastic. Can’t wait for the photos!

  6. I love these photos. especially the first one. They look so familiar; I swear I house-sat a place with a deck and “lawn” just like that red cottage one! And the little snow-bound cottage! Just beautiful!

    One of these days …

My memories don’t originate in Sweden, though, but from Bella Coola, on BC’s north coast. Similar terrain, and a Norwegian settlement, with neat, squat, sturdy log houses. And lots of snow.

  7. Did you say a month?
    Wow! 🙂
In that case, I’d lounge the same way your beautiful dog did in the first photo!

  8. Are you sure the snow will be gone by then:-)
Looks more like sheds. And remarkably like our first home, when visitors from abroad would say “Where is your REAL home?” That was complete with outdoor loo too.
Pretty, but slightly taxing in day-to-day life. I fell for the 17th century prettiness and we stood it for eight years. Come take a look and smile and enjoy the great comforts in your real home.
I speak in jest of course: it is a great idea and lately we have been doing the same. Rather a shed than a caravan any day.

  9. I have a poster. It’s a Swedish village consisting of mostly wooden cottages. Actually, it was given to me by a Swedish pen pal.

Every household has a flag pole in front their house.
Swedish flags are everywhere in that poster!!
    Talk about patriotism! 😉

  11. What a beautiful spot. We had a modest lake cabin in northern Minnesota where my siblings and I all learned how to live with outdoor plumbing, no running water (we got water at a nearby well), and gas lights instead of electricity. We were pretty proud of ourselves. These days, I’m just as happy to have indoor plumbing, especially at night. PS, I love your site; haven’t been here for a while.

  14. What a wonderful tradition. We Americans stay wound tighter than a three day clock most of the time and just don’t take the time to unwind. We’d be a heather nation if we did!

    Woohoo for indoor toilets! :o)

God bless ya and have an amazin’ day sweetie!!!

  15. Looks wonderful Fi, can see it draped in sunshine and green folage…you guys will have a wonderful time and that you’re allowed to bring a dog is wonderful! I’ve looked repeatedly for a cottage that accepts dogs but it’s hard to find…well, maybe it’s easier with only one dog vs five!! Hehehehe…
