The Viking Dog

Imagine if you will …

Cold winter sunshine,

An iced over lake swarming with dog walkers and ice skaters,

Temperatures well below freezing.

Suddenly, on the way home, we arrive at the little bridge over the cold stream feeding into that frozen, frozen lake.

It’s the only open water for miles around and the meeting place for shivering ducks.

And yet – it is tempting, so tempting.

“Will I? Won’t I?”

Why not?

It’s refreshing, very refreshing!

After taking the plunge, Oscar shakes diamonds into the air and trots home, satisfied with his long winter walk.

Life is so much better when you carry sunny weather in your heart…

    • I think the expression you’re looking for is: barking mad!

  3. What a brave dog! Great stori illustrated with great photos!
You said that my photo was looking warmish. Well it was terribly cold. Every time I took a photo my hands were freezing. But thanks for your comment and have a great weekend.

  9. I see that Oscar (good boy that he is) is waiting for permission to take the plunge. The action shots are marvelous – so crisp. This is a wonderful line: “Life is so much better when you carry sunny weather in your heart” Enjoy the weekend, Fi.

  10. Oh, Oscar, that looks so-o-o cold. Brave boy!
Recently, someone told me Golden Retrievers have an extra layer of fat to protect them from the cold. That must be why our Lindy loves to go for walks when it’s too cold for my husband. (Minus twenty-something Celsius.)

    • Goldens have an extra layer of fur too. Oscar is a working golden so he doesn’t have the extra fat… but his fur keeps him nice and warm anyway.

  11. Oscar just proved that in life the only thing you need is a warm heart😉

    Enjoy your week-end

  20. Oscar would have died if he had done that in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in the middle of February.
I love your narration of the events though. I was captivated.

  27. The shots with Oscar gloriously jumping into the beautiful blue water and then dog-paddling his way back ashore are my favorites. Looks like someone had a mighty fine day!

WOW!!! He is more of a viking dog then my gang, I don’t think they’d ever jump in the water like that, if we could find water that wasn’t frozen!!! WOW, I’m totally impressed- or just plain amazed!!

    February 20, 2011 at 09:09

  35. I was obviously never a dog in a former life. No way would I do that.

  51. Wow! Just reading through this entry made me cold & it’s back to the high 70’s here in Texas these days! Thanks for the fun!

    February 21, 2011 at 05:56

  52. I love that last line.

    February 21, 2011 at 12:58

  53. February 21, 2011 at 15:42

  54. Haha, you said that he loves the cold! Certainly he inherits the Viking trait:) We only have cats and I am sure they would never do that.
Amazing photos, as always, especially the last one.
    Have a wonderful day.

    February 21, 2011 at 16:17

  55. Wow, that must have been so cold! But it looks like he’s having a great time anyway. Our dog Lady is supposed to like water (she’s part Brittany Spaniel) but she refuses to go outside if it’s even raining — and you can forget swimming:-)

    February 21, 2011 at 20:52

  56. marina

oh my gosh!!! how can he go in that cold water? he is so beautiful!

    February 22, 2011 at 17:33

  57. I’m so glad I’m set up to get your posts via email so I didn’t miss this one…
“Life is so much better when you carry sunny weather in your heart…” So true! And Oscar truly must be a Viking Dog.

    February 22, 2011 at 18:04

  58. Such a beautiful sentence:
“After taking the plunge, Oscar shakes diamonds into the air and trots home, satisfied with his long winter walk.”

    February 24, 2011 at 05:16

  59. I know that dogs are more prepared for this than humans, but it REALLY makes me cold just looking at the pictures of Oscar jumping into that cold, cold water. And, you’re right, as soon as a dog gets wet he seems to suddenly want to be your lap dog!:)

    February 24, 2011 at 11:26

  60. I love the picture of your dog at the lake! Would you consider letting me use it in an email newsletter for a Rescue organization? I can email. you more details if you like.
