The stuff of memories

Memories are like small children wandering along a shore

Or running down a sunlit path towards adventure.

You never know which pebbles they might pick up to store away in their treasure chests.

It might an outing, like this one in summer when we went to England,

Days full of laughter and family and weathered houses over 400 years old.

I feel as if the days are slipping through my fingers so quickly.

Yet in childhood time stands still, even as it is flying past.

Life is a series of moments – both past and present – and what matters most is, perhaps,

Not how many moments you’ve enjoyed, but how many of those moments took your breath away.

  1. Totally agree with you Fi, why is it time is flying so much faster as adults and as a child it never went fast enough?
    Lovely photos!!

  2. I think the “running sown a sunlit path” simile gets more appropriate the older one gets: the years just fly by!

  5. The slower I go, the faster the time goes. You’ve captured the feel of that perfectly, and at the same time put it in perspective with 400 year-old houses and 100 year-old phone booths.

  6. Your pictures and words brought back my childhood memories. The child waving hands, reminds me my daughter waving from school bus on the first day of school. Thanks for sharing wonderful moments.

  7. Your words couldn’t be more true…time did seem to stand still when I was a kid wanting to grow up…and now it’s seems to fly by way too fast. You are right, the moments that take our breathe away are moments that we will always treasure.
I enjoyed these photo’s and your words today. Thank you!
Hope you Monday has been marvelous! XX

  8. These are delightful photos. The one of the little girl in the bus window is precious and if I close my eyes I can just imagine that I hear the birds singing.

  9. Oh, what wonderful words to go with your photos. Time does indeed pass quickly, but the memories capture it back again in an instant. I love that old phone box…

  10. I agree, life is all about memories and as my sons get older, they remember the wonderful holidays in Cancun, the safari we had in Kenya, even though my middle son was only six at the time. Great photos of warmth and sunshine.

  11. What a wonderfully delightful post! So very true, we keep so very busy that we let life and the memories pass us by….like the speed of light. We all need to slow down and soak in a little more of this beautiful life we are given.

Ya’ll have the most marvelously blessed day!!!

  14. I really like old houses especially those that were well-taken care of. We’re feeling the same thing..life is passing by so fast that I feel I can’t almost keep up with it. So, the best thing to do is just enjoy the ride. have a good week!

  15. Didn’t think that was Sweden… Have been watching Wallander.

When you’re 10, 1 year is 10% of your life – it drags like molasses. And then it all accelerates.

  18. Lovely story. It is the timelessness of it all that is so striking.

Been meaning to ask you whether your children speak English or Swedish with you? I always spoke English, but my children answered back in German. Now that they are older they do speak with me in English sometimes, but general rule is this sort of two-language communication.
