Shelter

There is a lot of space in Sweden – and in that space, you can find all sorts of hiking trails criss-crossing the countryside.

These trails offer good walking, stunning scenery and resting places for the weary hiker.

Shelter

You can rest your tired head in the shelters, which are usually equipped with free firewood, tables and a fireplace around which you can roast your hot dogs and warm your hands.

And sometimes – these shelters provide a little more …

… a private lake for a swimming dog (can you see him?), a serene view and an oasis for the thirsty soul.

  1. It would be so nice to get out there and explore…Hoping the children’s little legs will be big enough soon! Your dog looks like he’s having fun!

  2. Neat, Norway only has benches (if you’re lucky) that is very cool, several times I could think to take a walk but I’m afraid I’ll get caught in bad weather too far from any decent shelter. And I love the swimming dog…what nuts they are, polar bear swimming like that in freezing water!!!

  3. Wow, that’s pretty considerate. I can’t imagine, say, New Yorkers leaving anything in pristine condition with supplies for the next people. I just picked them at random, you can actually insert just about any city name in the world instead.

  4. I was going to say what Wolynski said. I’m surprised someone hasn’t moved in already. (Great minds and all that…) I love that these places are just there ready to be used if needed.

  5. What a great concept, we have some huts like that, but they are mostly in parks. Who brings in the firewood? Are they on private land? Or public?

    1. It’s amazing. The huts are on public land and it is the county/state that makes sure everything is clean and that there is always enough firewood for people to use.

  6. Those shelters remind me of when I used to take my then little boy canoeing in Dalsland/Värmland. We usually “went wild” for a week but preferred to use our tent. The water in the lakes were clean enough to drink! Mind you, this was around 1980, and I would not recommend drinking it now.

    BTW Pianotrappan was fantastic!

  7. How very interesting! That’s pretty cool that there is always enough wood to start a fire. That would motivate me to hike knowing that at the end we could rest and warm ourselves up with a camp fire.

  8. i like the concept of having cabins/resting places along the trails…this one, complete with the swimming dog would be a nice stop.

  9. I like camping and hiking. It’s good to know that there’re shelters like these along the way. I was trying to see the dog on the lake but i can’t 🙂

  10. Imagine – if these huts were in the UK they’d either get people living in them all year round or the wood would be nicked straight away.

I realised that my comment didn’t really mention your interesting post so I returned to do just that – see, I do read them but sometimes I just have to get out what is in my head 🙂

    1. No problem! – and how kind of you to get back to me. It snowed today so am hoping that doesn’t come to you next!

I just can’t imagine getting free firewood in hundreds of shelters on hiking trails in the UK… can you?

  11. I would have commented sooner, but I had to spend some time looking for the dog. The shelters are a great idea, and it’s great that they seemed to be kept up so well.
