I’ve just spent ages catching up with your blog!! Loved the story about your niece and the naked Swede….you know why it would never happen here….it’s waaay too cold (and things shrink in the cold!!)
Love the photo of the shoes!! Is there a particular reason that they are hanging from the wire?

I have no idea what those trainers were doing up there! We were driving through Stockholm after a day out, when I saw them. Luckily, we were at a traffic light so I wound down the window, stuck my head out and took the shot!

Do you know how often we see shoes on Power lines here???
Have no idea why But here in our little country Oz town it occurs often.
Never thought to photograph it though…Lol!

Well I have some of Mr FF’s trainers that I thought would lose their ‘Runner’ smell by being washed but I still haven’t got them dry 4 days later. Perhaps I’d better find a wire to hang them from

That’s a very familiar site around campus here. And one pair of shoes dangling from the power lines seem to attract more – before you know it, there are shoes of all sorts up and down the lines.

Being the POT capital of the world, BC that is, not our home, we have encountered many of those shoes on the power lines. I have read in the newspaper, and don’t quote me, because I would rather believe that it is not true……
That those shoes are to signify that a drug dealer lives on that street.
They also went on to say that there was significance in how many shoes were on the line, and other nonsense. Three shoes meaning something completely different than 2 and so on. We tend to see them a lot in Surrey, which has a high reputation for drug dealers.
I don’t know how true this is, but I do remember reading it and how sinister it sounded, it stuck in my mind. I have seen those shoes for decades, and I find it hard to believe that this is the true reason.

My guess is that it all started with the movie “Wag the Dog”. In this movie an invented war-hero (last name “Shoe”) from a fabricated war, was supposed to be rescued from captivity, and the campaign to “Bring back old Shoe” was symbolised by people throwing their shoes up on power lines.
It’s a good movie, and it did quite well, so it’s not surprising that a few people copied the idea, and that it then spread further from that.
If my theory is correct, then this trend would have started in 1997, when the movie came out. Anybody got a counterexample of that?

I hope the shoes thrown on the line mean that the person totally gave up on shoes and is now walking around Stockholm barefoot! Just think of it – a new trend to catch on ;-))

I have always heard that the shoes you see on a power or phone wire would would have once belonged to a gang member that was shot or killed trying to commit a crime. I don’t know if it is the family and friends of the gangbanger, that would throw the shoes up there as a memorial, or the killer throwing them up there as a warning to others in the neighborhood.

The police tell us here that shoes over a wire is a sign of a gang marking its territory. So if the shoes fit, I wish they would get in them and take a long walk off a short pier. I hope yours are just somone’s silliness!

I live in the sticks, we mostly need our shoes..unlike some of your very hardly relatives Lady Fi. I sense these are not her style anyway.
Maybe some Mom just went bananas because a kid wouldn’t pick up their shoes? Strange.. but interesting strange as many people have commented..I found all the comments quite educational too.
Now I will have to watch out for shoes in powerlines! 🙂

Had to tell you there was something in the newspaper here today about shoes being tossed over electrical wires like this to indicate places where people could buy drugs!!! When I saw the photo in the paper I thought immediately of your post and had to share that with you!! Though I like the way you portrayed this photo!!
