Brass monkey weather

It’s brass monkey weather at the moment. Minus 15.5 C with no signs of getting any warmer. I decided to meet the day with two pairs of trousers and four jumpers and a coat on, topped off with a warm hat and gloves and boots.

Man – was I warm! Then I went outside for about 15 seconds before discovering that my legs were freezing, my eyelashes had turned into ice sculptures and there was an Arctic gale playing havoc with my ankles. 45 minutes later, I returned home with no feeling in my hands and toes. I must have left it out on the ice somewhere.

Picnics on the ice are short-lived affairs. It’s great fun walking or skating on the lake, but taking off our gloves to eat sandwiches gets rather painful. The dog doesn’t seem to  mind – but that might have something to do with the fact that he doesn’t have any gloves…

Anyway, gritting my teeth and pulling my hat down over my eyes (something to do with the fact that if you can’t see the cold, you can’t feel it…), I set out to suffer on your account, dear readers. Because as you know, there is nothing I will do won’t do for you!

You see, I spotted a bridge, right out there in the middle of nowhere – or so it seemed. A bridge joining two tiny spits of land in the lake. I wanted to snap the bridge in its virgin snow – but the dog got there first.

You know what? Maybe this brass monkey weather isn’t so bad after all….

  1. Welcome to my world of cold…I think it’s a mind over matter thing, if I tell myself i’m not cold I can stay pretty warm but the minute I start to say it’s cold I shiver and I feel it…weird..yesterday we lost Isabella on our walk, had to walk everywhere to try and find her and I was actually sweating!!! Didn’t feel the cold til I stopped and the sweat dripping down my back felt like ice…ugh…damn dogs….
Beautiful photo though….thanks for thinking of us on that one…

  2. Oh my goodness, I had to put on a hat and gloves just to read this post! Beautiful snow pictures, though – thanks for sacrificing yourself for the greater good!

  3. I can’t imagine having temperatures like that. It’s 2 degrees outside atm and it’s bloody freezing – I simply can’t imagine feeling any colder than I do. You did well to brave the cold and bring us that lovely photo though – a sterling effort.

  4. I love the dogs pose in the first photo. He’s all, “The lake. My lake. It is my domain.”

I grew up in Pittsburgh, which gets pretty darn cold. The day we buried my grandmother in January, it was -13C, which is why she and my grandfather had the foresight to buy a drawer inside a building rather than two graves in the ground. It was nice and warm with benches to sit on.

  5. Well, I was feeling sorry for myself and so were my little bollocks this morning when it was minus 7. I can’t even begin to imagine what minus 15 must be like. Brrrrrr, is all I can say. Lovely photos. It might be bloody cold but it’s damned pretty:)

  6. Amy: Brrr… must have been cold looking for Isabella – and she’s the one with the nice big furry coat!

Dog-geek + French F: Temps dipping down to minus 17 C now… any future sacrifices might be in short supply! 😉

Meg: Yes – the dog loves the freedom of his kingdom, I mean – the lake!

Po: 0 in the UK is like -40 C anywhere else! It’s so damp, and the cold INSIDE is terrible!

Henry: Oscar likes the cold. His balls seem pretty much unaffected…

  7. Living on the Wet Coast here, the coldest we have encountered this winter is -16C. That is cold for us, especially with the wind chill factor. Up country in Armstrong it was getting down to -35 at night, and then a wind chill. It is cold, but the guys are always saying “oh it’s a dry cold”. LOL

Like that would make any difference to our feet!

Lovely shots, thanks for braving the weather, we do appreciate it, honestly.
Now go back out there and get some sunset shots. Ha ha ha!

  9. Beautiful photos…I’m glad I’m looking at them inside my nice warm house with a relatively “warm” temperature in comparison outside too.

If you want “virgin” snow, I’d be happy to photoshop those footprints right out of there for you. 😉

    Thanks for sharing with us.

  10. I feel rather guilty sitting out on the patio in my bathers, and we enjoyed a cool night time swim last night!! The photos are beautiful, Fi, by the way.
