Breathing Paris

According to Victor Hugo, ‘Breathing Paris preserves the soul.’

It is a city full of unexpected sights and surprises:

Like a vintage merry-go-round

La belle epoque

Or the exquisite stained glass window

Of the Galeries Lafayette.

Galeries Lafayette

It is a place where you turn a corner

To find history towering over you –

Old spire

And love being locked forever

On bridges while the ancient cathedral,

Notre Dame, looks on.

Arc+ND

It is a mix of the old and the new,

History and modern day,

Light and life.

I’ve never been that impressed with Paris but you are indeed making me see it differently. The carousel – be still my heart but the architecture is amazing!

  6. Well you have one of my very favorite historical places ever on this post…Notre Dame. My daughter went to college in the states at this school, so my dream has always been to see this in person. Thanks for sharing.

    April 8, 2013 at 16:25

  7. Beautiful photos of Paris. I can assure you that I was not able to make them as beautiful. Cant wait to see more. For the time I was also in those places, I think the carousel is the Place of the Hotel de la Ville.

    I just love that carousel.

    April 8, 2013 at 18:48

  18. I was last in Paris in late January 2005. It was cold, but I never minded it. The whole City is such a feast for the eyes and the soul! I’ll take it with ice and snow as well as steamy heat! If I could live my life over, I’d live it in Paris!

    April 8, 2013 at 18:53

  19. Gorgeous pictures and thanks for showing me Paris through your lens.

    April 8, 2013 at 19:07

  20. Like several of your commenters, I’ve never been to Paris either, but I’m enjoying my virtual visit through your blog! The carousel is charming, of course, but that stained glass (directly overhead, I take it?) is stunning!! I love a place with so much history, and Paris sure has all of that. What lovely architecture – that’s a wonderful photo of Notre Dame! And I’d never heard of the Paris Love Locks before, but armed with your one-word hint I kept studying that photo till I recognized some locks among that colorful jumble behind your adorable model there, and then went searching the web to find out what the deal is with the locks! :-) (I love it when I learn something new from someone’s blog). I think every bridge that spans a canal with locks should have one. :-)

    April 8, 2013 at 19:20

    • Ah yes, perhaps I should have said they were love locks. I do have several clear pictures of the locks, so will no doubt be posting those some time in the future.

      April 8, 2013 at 19:22

    April 9, 2013 at 13:59

  59. I recall there always used to be a carousel at the foot of the sets to Sacre Coeur when I lived in Paris, but it wasn’t the only one!

    April 9, 2013 at 15:02

  60. The young girl with a winning smile is lovely and the carrousel is a marvel. But I am afraid breathing in Paris would not be as pure an experience as it was in Victor Hugo’s day. Of course he didn’t mean it literally. But on a more serious note he would never have conceived of the layer of smog I saw there during my visit. It hovered over the beautiful city like a veil. There are similar conditions world over. I hope we learn how to take better care of our air.

    April 9, 2013 at 16:25
